Components:

(1) Toluene, C7H8; [108-88-3] NIST WebBook
(2) Seawater, H2O; [7732-18-5(C)] NIST WebBook

Variables:

Ambient temperature: 15 - 25 °C
Salinity: 35 g/kg sln

Prepared by:

D. Mackay, W.Y. Shiu

Method/Apparatus/Procedure:

Saturate solution was prepared by equilibrating seawater with an excess of hydrocarbon for 24 hrs. in a constant temperature gyrotary chaker followed by 12 hrs. stationary period. A 100 mL-aliquot was extracted three times with n-hexane. The concentrated hexane extract was anlzyed by a gas chromatograph equipped with a flame ionization detector to determine the hydrocarbon concentration.

Estimated Errors:

Ambient temperature: ±0.1 K
Mass concentration (m/v) (1): ±2%

Experimental Values:
Solubility of toluene in seawater
T (°C) x1 MR1 (g1/100 g2) MR1 (µg(1)/g(sln))
15.0 8.2 x 10-5 4.1 x 10-2 410.0
20.0 8.2 x 10-5 4.1 x 10-2 410.0
25.0 8.4 x 10-5 4.2 x 10-2 418.5
