Conditions:
Room Temp: Composition at 25 - 100 °C
Compilers:
St. Trendafilova, Chr. Balarew
Methodology:
No information is given about the method used. The aluminum content was determined complexometrically by back titrating excess Trilon B with a $\pu{0.1 N} \ce{Pb(NO3)2}$ solution. Xylenol orange was the indicator. The formate ion content was determined permanganometrically or by titration with dilute $\ce{NaOH}$.
Sample Information:
- Aluminum formate was prepared by dissolving PA grade $\ce{AlCl3.6H2O}$ and PA grade $\ce{NaHCO3}$ at room temperature in a minimum quantity of 10% PA grade formic acid. After 5-6 hrs a residue of $\ce{Al(CHO2)3.3H2O}$ is formed. It is separated by filtration and air dried. Aluminum formate was also formed by dissolving a fresh suspension of $\ce{Al(OH)3}$ in 30-35% PA grade formic acid at 60°C, filtering and air drying.
Measurement Errors:
Ambient temperature: No information is given.
Mass concentration (m/v) (1): No information is given.
System Components:
- Aluminum formate, $\ce{ Al(CHO2)3 }$; [7360-53-4] NIST WebBook
- Water, $\ce{ H2O }$; [7732-18-5] NIST WebBook
Experimental Data
Note: AlOH(CHO2)2·0.5H2O is totally converted to the trihydrate at 50°C in a solution containing 25 mass % formic acid.
