SDS Volume (4184)

Volume 71. Nitromethane with Water or Organic Solvents, p 1253

Original Measurements

Mulliken, S. P.; Wakeman, R. L.; Recl. Trav. Chim. Pays-Bas, 54, 366-72 (1935).

Variables:

Room Temp: 333 - 352 $\pu{K}$

Prepared by:

V.P. Sazonov

Method/Apparatus/Procedure:

The synthetic method was used. Miscibility was determined in a glass-stoppered tube of 4 mm inside diameter. Equal volumes (0.1mL) of (1) and (2) were measured into the tube which was then strapped to a thermometer, warmed to 5 or 10 °C above the solubility temperature, mixed well by shaking, and then allowed to cool slowly, still shaking, in a bath of white oil.

Source and Purity of Materials:
  1. Not specified.
  2. (1-methylethenyl)cyclohexane synthesized in the Research Laboratory of Organic Chemistry, Massachusetts Institute of Technology; other cycloalkenes were purest available commercial samples.
Estimated Errors:

Ambient temperature: Not reported.
Pressure: Not reported.

Components:
  1. Nitromethane $\ce{ CH3NO2 }$ [75-52-5]; NIST WebBook
  2. Bicyclo[4,2,2]deca-2,4,7,9-tetraene $\ce{ C10H10 }$ [15677-13-1]; NIST WebBook
    (1-Methylethenyl)cyclohexane $\ce{ C9H16 }$ [2157-18-8]; NIST WebBook
    1-Methyl-4-(1-methylethyl)cyclohexene $\ce{ C10H18 }$ [5502-88-5]; NIST WebBook
