Volume 67. Halogenated Ethanes and Ethenes with Water, p 548

Original Measurements

Barr, R. S.; Newsham, D. M. T.; Fluid Phase Equilib. 1987, 35, 189-205.

Variables:

Room Temp: 293 - 323 $\pu{K}$

Prepared by:

A.L. Horvath

Method/Apparatus/Procedure:

The water-rich mixture was studied using gas-liquid chromatography in which a mixture of methane and 1,1,2-trichloroethane vapor passed through the sampling loop. The eluted 1,1,2-trichloroethane was determined with a flame ionization detector. The organic-rich mixture was studied using an isopiestic method in which $\ce{CaCl2}$ solution controlled the partial pressure of water. The water concentration of the organic phase was determined by using a Karl Fischer titration apparatus.

Source and Purity of Materials:
  1. Aldrich Chemical Co. Ltd., redistilled in a glass sieve tray column before use.
  2. Double distilled tap water.
Estimated Errors:

Ambient temperature: ±0.05 K.
Mass concentration (m/v) (1): Not specified.

Components:
  1. 1,1,2-Trichloroethane, $\ce{ C2H3Cl3 }$; [79-00-5] NIST WebBook
  2. Water, $\ce{ H2O }$; [7732-18-5] NIST WebBook
Experimental Data

Mole fraction of 1,1,2-trichloroethane (x1) was calculated from the activity coefficients at infinite dilution (γ1) using the relation x1 = 1/γ1.
