SDS Volume (2409)

Volume 60. Halogenated Methanes with Water, p None

Original Measurements

Hunter-Smith, R. J.; Balls, P. W.; Liss, P. S.; Tellus 35B, 170 (1983).

Variables:

Room Temp: 283 - 298 $\pu{K}$

Prepared by:

A.L. Horvath

Method/Apparatus/Procedure:

The multiple equilibrium technique was used to measure the Henry's law constant as described elsewhere [1]. A known volume of seawater in a syringe was shaken with a known volume of trichloromethane. After equilibration, the headspace was separated and analyzed for trichloromethane. A gas chromatograph fitted with an electron capture detector was used for the analysis.

Source and Purity of Materials:
  1. Source and purity not given.
  2. Samples from 48° N to 65° S in the Atlantic in late 1981.
Estimated Errors:

Ambient temperature: ±0.2 K.
Mass concentration (m/v) (1): ±5.5% std. dev.

Experimental Data

The Henry's law constants (dimensionless) were derived from the best-fit lines of van't Hoff plots:

loge H=-3649/T(K) + 10.63

$T$ (°C) 100w1 $x_{1}$ $k_{\rm{D}}$ (m3 atm mol-1)
10 0.65009.864 x 10-40.1046
15 0.64709.818 x 10-40.1309
20 0.64289.753 x 10-40.1624
25 0.63779.675 x 10-40.2001
