(2) Water, H2O; [7732-18-5] NIST WebBook

Original Measurements

Robertson, J. B.; South Afr. J. Sci. 1933, 30, 187-95.

Variables:

Ambient temperature: 5.4 °C

Prepared by:

G.T. Hefter

Method/Apparatus/Procedure:

Moist benzene-saturated air was allowed to bubble through moist benzene in a freezing-point tube until a constant freezing point was obtained. A few drops of distilled water were then added and the solution stirred 'for some time' and the freezing point re-determined. The water content of the saturated sln was calculated from the freezing point depression (relative to pur benzene) by assuming the water to be monomolecular in solution.

Source and Purity of Materials:
  1. Kahlbaum, "pro-analysi", used without further purification.
  2. Distilled, purity not specified.
Estimated Errors:

Ambient temperature: not specified.

Experimental Values:
Note: The solubility of water in benzene at 5.4°C was reported to be 0.035 percent, corresponding to 0.035 g(2)/100 g sln.
The corresponding mole fraction (x2), calculated by the compiler, is 1.5 × 10-3.
