Volume 77. Nitroalkanes with Water or Organic Solvents: Binary and Multicomponent Systems, p None

Original Measurements

Hoerr, C. W.; Harwood, H. J.; J. Phys. Chem. 56, 1068-73 (1952).

Variables:

Room Temp: 243 - 275 $\pu{K}$

Prepared by:

N.I. Lisov, V.P. Sazonov

Method/Apparatus/Procedure:

The synthetic method was used. The solubilities of acid were determined by weighing 2 - 5 g portions of the acid into 2 cm x 15 cm Pyrex test-tubes which were fitted with a Nichrome stirrer and a thermocouple well, the test-tube being inserted into a larger tube which served as an air-bath. Upon successive additions of weighed amounts of solvent, the solubilities were determined by measuring the temperatures at which crystals precipitated and dissolved upon alternately cooling and heating the systems in an acetone-dry ice-bath or water-bath as required.

Source and Purity of Materials:
  1. Source not specified; best grade reagent; distilled.
  2. Chemical Division, Armour and Co.; purified by stepwise fractional crystallization and vacuum distilled a short Vigreux column; MP = -5.2°C, $n_{D}^{20}$ = 1.4703.
Estimated Errors:

Ambient temperature: ±0.1 K.

  1. Nitroethane, $\ce{ C2H5NO2 }$; [79-24-3] NIST WebBook
  2. cis,cis-9,12-Octadecadienoic acid, $\ce{ C18H32O2 }$; [60-33-3] NIST WebBook
