Volume 77. Nitroalkanes with Water or Organic Solvents: Binary and Multicomponent Systems, p None

Original Measurements

Khosla, M. P.; Widom, B.; J. Colloid Interface Sci. 76, 375-392 (1980).

Variables:

Room Temp: 288 - 299 $\pu{K}$

Prepared by:

N.I. Lisov, V.P. Sazonov

Method/Apparatus/Procedure:

The synthetic method was used. Mixtures of near-critical composition were made in glass tubes, closed at one end and joined to vacuum-tight Teflon-glass valves. Phase-separation temperatures were determined visually. The critical composition sample was the one most opalescent at its phase-separation temperature. Two different pycnometers, volumes 25 mL and 50 mL, of the type glass-bulb-to-capillary, were used to determine densities of mixtures. Surface tension was measured by the differential-capillary-rise method using a sample cell adapted from Calado, et al. [1].

Source and Purity of Materials:
  1. Aldrich Chemical Inc.; purity 96.0 mass%; dried and double distilled under a reduced pressure in a 36 in. glass column; purity 99.96-99.98 mass%.
  2. Aldrich Chemical Inc.; research grade; purity 96.0 mass%; distilled at atmospheric pressure in the 36 in. glass column; purity 99.99 mass% by GLC.
Estimated Errors:

Ambient temperature: Not specified.
