Volume 77. Nitroalkanes with Water or Organic Solvents: Binary and Multicomponent Systems, p None

Original Measurements

Clever, H. L.; Pirkle Jr., Q. R.; Allen Jr., B. J.; Derrick, M. E.; J. Chem. Eng. Data 17, 31-4 (1972).

Variables:

Room Temp: 279 - 298 $\pu{K}$

Prepared by:

N.I. Lisov, V.P. Sazonov

Method/Apparatus/Procedure:

The synthetic method was used. Solutions of (1) and (2) were prepared by weight from glass syringes in 13 mm x 100 mm Kimax screw cap culture tubes and sealed by a cap with a Teflon faced rubber liner. The tubes were suspended in a 3 L well-stirred water bath and cloud points observed visually. At least two observations were made of each set of samples, the first at a relatively fast cooling rate to find the approximate cloud point temperature and the second at a slow cooling rate to more precisely determine the cloud point temperature.

Source and Purity of Materials:
  1. Matheson, Coleman and Bell; practical grade; distilled at 57°C/12.9 kPa.
  2. Fisher; dried over $\ce{CaSO4}$ and distilled at atmospheric pressure from $\ce{CaH2}$.
Estimated Errors:

Ambient temperature: ±0.1 K

Components:
  1. Nitroethane, $\ce{ C2H5NO2 }$; [79-24-3] NIST WebBook
  2. Cyclohexane, $\ce{ C6H12 }$; [110-82-7] NIST WebBook
