Volume 72. Nitromethane with Water or Organic Solvents: Ternary and Quaternary Systems, p 1513

Source Publication

Sazonov, V. P.; Zh. Fiz. Khim. 42, 3094-6 (1968).

Conditions:

Room Temp: 292 - 313 $\pu{K}$

Compilers:

N.V. Sazonov, V.P. Sazonov

Methodology:

The synthetic method (Alekseev [1]) was used. Ampoules with given amount of (1), (2) and (3) were heated with vigorous stirring to a temperature somewhat higher than the phase transition temperature and then were slowly cooled till turbidity appeared. Then the turbidity disappearance temperature was determined when heated at a slow rate.

Sample Information:
  1. Source not specified; pure grade reagent; dried and repeatedly distilled in a packed glass column; $n_{D}^{20}$ = 1.3819, $d_{4}^{20}$ = 1.1380.
  2. Source not specified; pure grade reagent; dried and repeatedly distilled at vacuum; $n_{D}^{20}$ = 1.4248, $d_{4}^{20}$ = 0.8219.
  3. Twice distilled.
Measurement Errors:

Ambient temperature: ±0.01 K.

Experimental Data

The temperatures of phase transitions were determined in ternary mixtures with a constant weight content of (3), respectively, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0, 5.0, 6.0, 20.0, 40.0 and 60.0 mass %. L1 nitromethane-rich phase, L2 alcohol-rich phase, L3 water-rich phase. The phase which is being dissolved is indicated in the table.
The compositions of coexistent three liquid phases at 22°C, 25°C, and 29°C are also presented in graphical form.
