Original Measurements

Mason, L. S.; Washburn, E. R.; J. Am. Chem. Soc. 59, 2076 (1937).

Variables:

Room Temp: 298 $\pu{K}$

Prepared by:

A. Skrzecz

Method/Apparatus/Procedure:

The titration method was used. Water was added to binary alcohol-toluene mixtures of known composition until the saturation point was reached. The refractive indexes of these mixtures were determined with an immersion refractometer and then were used to construct the refractive index/compositions of equilibrium phases.

Source and Purity of Materials:
  1. Synthetically prepared; dried over lime, distilled; $d_{4}^{25}$ = 0.78672, $n_{D}^{25}$ = 1.326 60
  2. Mallinckrodt, reagent grade; dried over $\ce{Na}$, distilled; $d_{4}^{25}$ = 0.86216, $n_{D}^{25}$ = 1.49375.
  3. Distilled form $\ce{KMnO4}$.
Estimated Errors:

Ambient temperature: Not reported.
Mass concentration (m/v) (1): Not reported.

Components:
  1. Methanol, $\ce{ CH4O }$; [67-56-1] NIST WebBook
