Method/Apparatus/Procedure:
A mixture of 1,2-dichloroethane and water was preheated to the desired temperature before rapid mixing. The resulting mixture was thermostated and the equilibrium was maintained by vigorous stirring. The concentration of 1,2-dichloroethane in water was determined by gas chromatography.
Source and Purity of Materials:
- Solvay, rectified before use, 99.9% pure by GLC analysis.
- Distilled.
Estimated Errors:
Ambient temperature: ±0.5 K.
Mass concentration (m/v) (1): Not specified.
Components:
- 1,2-Dichloroethane, $\ce{ C2H4Cl2 }$; [107-06-2] NIST WebBook
- Water, $\ce{ H2O }$; [7732-18-5] NIST WebBook
Experimental Data
The temperature dependence of the solubility of 1,2-dichlorethane in water versus absolute temperature was expressed by the equation:
log10 (S/mol dm-3)=2070/(T/K) - 15.369+0.0247(T/K), where S=Solubility, and T=absolute temperature.
For example, the calculated solubility derived from the above equation is 8.53 × 10-1 [100 w1] at 298.15 K (compiler).
