Volume 67. Halogenated Ethanes and Ethenes with Water, p 584

Original Measurements

Gross, P. M.; Saylor, J. H.; J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1931, 53, 1744-51.

Variables:

Room Temp: 288 - 303 $\pu{K}$

Prepared by:

A.L. Horvath

Method/Apparatus/Procedure:

An excess of 1,2-dichloroethane in 500 g water was shaken for 12 hours in a waterbath thermostat. Samples were then withdrawn and read against pure water in an interferometer made by Zeiss [1]. A detailed description of the complete procedure is given in a Ph.D. thesis [2].

Source and Purity of Materials:
  1. Eastman Kodak Co., purified by fractional distillation before use.
  2. Distilled.
Estimated Errors:

Ambient temperature: ±0.02 K.
Mass concentration (m/v) (1): ±0.5%.
