SDS Volume (3188)

Volume 67. Halogenated Ethanes and Ethenes with Water, p 537

Original Measurements

Hunter-Smith, R. J.; Balls, P. W.; Liss, P. S.; Tellus 35B, 170 (1983).

Variables:

Room Temp: 278 - 298 $\pu{K}$

Prepared by:

A.L. Horvath

Method/Apparatus/Procedure:

The multiple equilibration technique was used to measure the Henry's law constant as described by McAuliffe [1]. A known volume of pure 1,1,1-trichloroethane in a syringe was shaken with a known volume of pure water. After equilibration, the headspace was separated and analyzed for the compound of interest. A gas chromatograph fitted with an electron capture detector was used for the analysis.

Source and Purity of Materials:
  1. Source and purity not given.
  2. Atlantic ocean samples, 48°N to 65°S latitudes, in late 1981.
Estimated Errors:

Ambient temperature: ±0.2 K.
Mass concentration (m/v) (1): ±5.5% std. dev.

Experimental Data

The Henry's law constant (H, dimensionless) was derived from a van't Hoff plot best-fit equation: loge H=13.04-3905/(T/K)
