Volume 37. Hydrocarbons in Water and Seawater, Part I, p 145

Source Publication

Masterton, W. L.; Gendrano, M. C.; J. Phys. Chem. 1966, 70, 2895-8.

Conditions:

Room Temp: 25 °C

Compilers:

Z. Maczynska, A. Maczynski

Methodology:

Equilibration of (1) and (2) was allowed to take place for at least two days. The organic phase was analyzed for water by the Karl Fischer method.

Sample Information:
  1. source not specified; free from thiophene; used as received.
  2. not specified.
Measurement Errors:

Ambient temperature: ±0.05 K
Mass concentration (m/v) (1): 0.0002 mol(2) dm-3 (mean deviation from duplicate determinations)

System Components:
  1. Benzene, $\ce{ C6H6 }$; [71-43-2] NIST WebBook
  2. Water, $\ce{ H2O }$; [7732-18-5] NIST WebBook
Experimental Data

The solubility of water in benzene at 25°C was reported to be 0.0347 mol (2) dm-3 sln.
The corresponding mass percent and mole fraction, x2, calculated by the compilers are 0.0715 g(2)/100 and 3.09 × 10-3. The assumption that 1 dm3 sln = 874 g sln was used in the calculation.
