Method/Apparatus/Procedure:
Analytical balance and constant temperature bath.
Mixtures of known composition were sealed in glass ampoules, and placed in a constant temperature bath. Ampoules were slowly rotated at about 0.25 rps, while the bath temperature was increased by 0.1 K every 1,200 seconds. Temperature at which the last trace of solid disappeared was visually determined.
Source and Purity of Materials:
- 98.67% minimum, Eastman Kodak Company, USA, was purified by column chromatography and recrystallized from toluene before use.
- Gold Label, Aldrich Chemical Company, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, was used as received.
Estimated Errors:
Ambient temperature: T/K: precision ±0.05. x1: ±0.0001 (compiler).
Components:
- Phenanthrene, $\ce{ C14H10 }$; [85-01-8] NIST WebBook
- Toluene, $\ce{ C7H8 }$; [108-88-3] NIST WebBook
