Method/Apparatus/Procedure:
Two calibrated glass spheres, one larger than the other, immersed in a bath connected to a mercury manometer were used. Approximately 200 mL of solvent was placed in the larger sphere and both were thoroughly evacuated. A supply of ethene was charged to the smaller flask to 2 atm pressure. Ethene was admitted to the flask containing the solvent and allowed to reach equilibrium by stirring. The pressures were read and material balances made to determine the solubility. Solubilities were measured for equilibrium pressures between 50 and 1300 mm of mercury pressure and Henry's law was found to apply in all cases.
Source and Purity of Materials:
- Ethene source and purity not given.
- Diethyl sulfate was Eastman practical grade purified by washing with $\ce{Na2CO3}$ solution and drying with $\ce{CaCl2}$.
Estimated Errors:
Ambient temperature: δT/K = ±0.05
Mass concentration (m/v) (1): δH/H = ±0.02
Components:
- Ethene, $\ce{ C2H4 }$; [74-85-1] NIST WebBook
- Diethyl sulfate, $\ce{ C4H10O4S }$; [64-67-5] NIST WebBook

(1) Calculated by compiler; mole fraction ethene, x1, is for a partial pressure of 101.325 kPa.
(2) Partial molal hear of solution tabulated by authors and based on equation:
ΔH = 2.303 [∂ log H/∂ (1/T)]
