<method>A supersaturated solution of tetrachloroethene in water was agitated for two hours at 20 °C. After storing for 2 hours the water phase was filtered through Whatman No. 2 filter paper before analysis. The concentration of tetrachloroethene in was determined by gas chromatography or by ultraviolet spectroscopy.</method>
