 <method>In a tube 1 cm diameter and 12 cm long known amount, by weight, of hydrocarbon and water were placed into a temperature controlled bath. The contents of the tube were stirred and alcohol was added gradually until a homogeneous solution was obtained. Observations were made visually through the telescope of a cathetometer. The samples were always weighed immediately before and after each experiment. Concentrations were reported as weight of water in 1 g of binary water-hydrocarbon mixture and the weight of alcohol necessary to make a homogenous solution. The mass of binary water-hydrocarbon mixture was about 1 g; the mass of alcohol-up to 5 g.</method>
