The contents of the tube were stirred and alcohol was added gradually until a homogeneous solution was obtained. Observations were made visually through the telescope of a cathetometer. The samples were always weighed immediately before and after each experiment. Concentrations were reported as weight of water in 1 g of binary water-hydrocarbon mixture and the weight of alcohol necessary to make a homogenous solution.
